Vice President
Policy
The Vice President is elected by the membership of ConnAPA. S/he must be a fellow member in good standing of the AAPA and ConnAPA.
Responsibilities
- Attend all officially designated Board and Academy business meetings.
- Uphold the responsibilities of a Board Member as outlined in the Academy Bylaws.
- Assume the duties of the President in his/her absence.
- Serve as Committee Chair or committee member if appointed.
- Periodically review and recommend revision of this position description as needed.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Board or President.
- Become familiar with all aspects of organization including history, committee operations & functions, and financial status.
- Run for presidency at the conclusion of the first elected year (this is not required but is customary)
- Seek out persons to work with during Presidential Year (e.g. Vice President, Committee Chairs), if applicable.
- Formulate agenda for upcoming term as President, if applicable.
Competencies
- Previous Board of Directors or Committee Chair experience (desirable).
- Knowledge of how to effectively run board meeting including a keen sense of diplomacy and ability to facilitate discussion.
- Strong dedication to the profession.
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to speak in public forums.
- Ability to lead, including ability to motivate others and delegate responsibility and tasks to others.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Multi-tasking skills.
- Timeliness and accuracy in completing projects.
Time Commitment
- This is a one-year commitment to ConnAPA but potentially a three-year commitment with President and Past President in second and third years, respectively.
- This position may require travel long distances and participation in daytime, evening and weekend meetings.
- The Vice President must be willing to attend all Board meetings and conference calls.
- The Vice President may be required to represent the President at Committee meetings, ConnAPA functions and other functions.
Annual Calendar
July/August
- Prepare for upcoming fiscal/membership year (July-June)
- Brainstorm and develop strategic plan with President, the rest of the BOD, and the committee chairs for the upcoming year
September
- Follow up on strategic planning information and ideas.
October
- Participate in PA Week activities.
November/December
- BOD Meeting: attend and assist where needed (meeting date subject to change).
January
- Submit nominee for the next Vice President.
- Make arrangements to meet with new Vice President.
- BOD Meeting: attend and assist where needed (meeting date subject to change).
- AAPA HOD: register if attending as an alternate.
- Work with Legislative Committee to schedule legislative appointments to advance the Academy’s legislative endeavors.
February
- Discuss with CME Chair the needs for Charter Oak Conference.
- Continue to work with Legislative Committee to schedule legislative appointments to advance the Academy’s legislative endeavors.
- Attend the AAPA-sponsored Constituent Organization Resource Exchange (CORE), available in odd years.
- Attend the AAPA-sponsored Capitol Connection (formerly Adventures in Lobbying), available in even years.
March
- Follow-up on ideas from CORE or Adventures in Lobbying (or other AAPA sponsored leadership event).
- Submit report on CORE or Adventures in Lobbying (or other AAPA sponsored leadership event).
- Attend COC (date subject to change).
April
- Attend COC (date subject to change).
- BOD Meeting: attend and assist where needed (meeting date subject to change).
May
- Budget planning: meet with new Vice President
June
- Attend formal recognition for outgoing President passing the gavel.
- Complete transition planning with outgoing President to ensure continuity, if applicable.
- Submit incoming President article for ConnAPA Newsletter, if applicable.
